What do you need?

I. Letter of Motivation Guidelines

If applicable for your study programme, bachelor applicants must submit a digital version of a letter of motivation in English (300-400 words). In that letter, please answer the following questions:

  • What are the characteristics needed to be a good future professional in your chosen industry?

  • Why are you interested in a career in your chosen field?

  • Why should Stenden accept you as a student in your chosen programme?

  • How did you research your choice of study?

  • How did you prepare yourself for studying in the Netherlands?

Please also include your resume / Curriculum Vitae.

II. Academic Requirements

Your diploma has to be comparable to an admissible Dutch diploma. To get an idea of how your diploma compares to a Dutch diploma, you can check the Nuffic website. The Nuffic site shows a list of common diplomas per country and the Dutch comparison for that diploma. For a 4-year bachelor programme at NHL Stenden, you need a diploma that is at minimum NLQF 4/EQF 4 level (Dutch/European Qualifications Framework)

NHL Stenden considers the information on the Nuffic website non-binding, the Central Student Administration will decide if you are admissible after you apply for a study programme through Studielink and provide us with the necessary documents through our iGO portal.

If you are a student from Vietnam or Zimbabwe, you may use a graduation statement filled out and signed by your educational institution as a temporary solution, in case you are set to receive your diploma after the application deadline. A valid diploma must always be provided before the start of the study programme.

Please note: If you do not have a diploma at the appropriate level and are not set to receive one before the start of the study programme, you might be eligible to take the 21+ entrance examination

III. Language Requirements

All non-EU/EEA applicants are required to submit an English proficiency test with their application. Exceptions can be made for students who have had their preparatory education in a country where English is the only official educational language.

The language requirements for EU/EEA students are the same as for Dutch students. If your diploma is mentioned in this list, and English is included as part of the curriculum, the additional English language test is not required. The same goes for students who followed the English language programme of the European Baccalaureate or International Baccalaureate and have subsequently received the EB-Certificate or IB-Diploma.

NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences accepts four kinds of official language tests in accordance with the Code of Conduct International Student in Dutch Higher Education:

  • Academic IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.0 for each skill).

  • TOEFL 550 (paper based), 213 (computer-based) or 80 (internet based). Original test results must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to NHL Stenden. The TOEFL institution code for NHL Stenden is C652.

  • Cambridge ESOL score FCE-C (169, or higher).

  • TOEIC 670 (Listening and Reading) and 290 (Speaking and Writing).

View the comparison between the different scores.

Please note: If you do not have the appropriate level yet, it is possible to enrol in our Preparatory English Language Course.

Upload these documents to the iGo NHL Stenden portal:
  1. A copy of your passport or ID card, valid at least until the start date of the study programme.

  2. A copy of your diplomas and grades. Certified copies have to be sent by post.

  3. A letter of motivation

  4. A copy of your IELTS or TOEFL language test results.
